New School-based Project!
In December 2000, The 1420 Foundation formed a working "Consortium" relationship with the Institute for Village Studies in Friday Harbor, Washington and its associated school, the Spring Street School, to further experiential sustainable development educational experiencesIVS places strong emphasis on travel-learning projects. The 1420 has been collaborating with IVS with student-oriented sustainable development assessment learning activities as well as partnership opportunities for experiential teaching and learning. Additionally, the 1420 is rendering support for IVS technology "Hub" development. Spring Street School students are planning a visit to 1420 participating schools in Blacksburg, VA this April during their eduational trip to Washington, D.C.
In late February, several Spring Street School students, including 18 college students, led by Spring Street School teachers and IVS trip leaders, commenced a four week trip to Dharamsala, India, and later, to Thailand. The students learned about the lives of villagers in these two areas and share information about potential joint sustainable development health, education and communications projects.
If you would like to see an update and past records of their travels and what they are learning, please see the Web Site created and posted by Dr. Frank James of the University of Washington's School of Public Health. Dr. James is taking the trip with the students, and leading them in their endeavors of community assessment and learning.
